Men’s Tennis Swept by #35 Virginia Tech in First Dual Match of 2003 BLACKSBURG, Va. -- Radford University’s Men’s Tennis team was swept in their first dual match of the season by #35 Virginia Tech, 7-0 at the Burrows/Burleson Tennis Center. The Highlanders fall to 2-2 on the season, while the Hokies improve to 5-1. Tech (5-1) won three matches to capture the doubles point then swept all six singles matches for the victory. In singles action, Brandon Johnson (Roanoke, Va.) fell to Francis Huot ranked No. 94 nationally in the No. 1 match 6-2, 6-1 and Arthur Vasarevic (Zagreb, Croatia) fell to 88th-ranked Andreas Laulund 6-2, 7-5 at No. 2 singles. In other singles results, Andre’ Cavaco (Faro, Portugal) was defeated by 78th-ranked Stephane Rod 6-3, 6-3 in No. 3 singles, while Robel Mengisteab (Kista, Sweden) dropped a tough No. 4 match, 4-6, 7-6, 10-3 to David Emery. Adel Abbas defeated Joakim Arhammar (Sollentuna, Sweden) 6-4, 6-0 at No. 5 while Angel Diankov picked up a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 6 over Dominic Soeur (Herndon, Va.). In doubles play, 44th-ranked Laulund/Rod won at No. 1 over Arhammar/Johnson 8-3, while Emery/Saber Kadiri defeated Cavaco/Vasarevic 8-3 at No. 2. Huot/Michael Kurz concluded the sweep at No. 3 with an 8-2 win over Mengisteab/Soeur. The Highlanders next match will be on Feb. 1 at 3:30 p.m. when they face Arkansas Little Rock in Blacksburg.
