Highlanders Upend Virginia Intermont in Regular Season Finale, 6-1 Radford, Va. -- Radford’s men’s tennis closed out their regular season in fine form, downing Virginia Intermont, 6-1, this afternoon at the Dedmon Center Courts. After falling in doubles, the Highlanders swept through singles competition for the win. Brandon Johnson opened up with a quick three-set victory, 6-1, 0-6, 6-0 at No. 1 singles over Jorge Asencio who is currently ranked No. 1 in NAIA singles. Andre Cavaco, Arthur Vasarevic and Robel Mengisteab followed with straight set wins at No. 3, 4, and 6 to ensure Radford of the win. At No. 2 and No. 5, Joakim Arhammar and Dominic Soeur battled back after dropping their first sets to win in three. Virginia Intermont won the doubles point when the No. 2 team of David Halldorsson and Vinicius Bitencourt def. and Soeur in a back-and-forth tiebreaker, 9-8 (6). The No. 3 team of Arhammar and Mengisteab earned the lone doubles win with an 8-3 victory. Next up for the Highlanders is the Big South Tournament hosted by Elon University from April 17-19. Radford currently sits in sixth place in the conference with a 2-5 record. Their opponent for the tournament has yet to be determined, as conference play will finish up this weekend.
