RU Men's Soccer Drops Exhibition To Spartans

RADFORD, Va. - Radford University men’s soccer dropped its final exhibition match of the season to UNC Greensboro, 4-0 Wednesday night at Patrick D. Cupp Memorial Stadium. (box score)

The Spartans struck early, scoring at the 1:55 mark in the first half when Brad McCurry found Scott Jones, who dropped the ball into the back left corner of the net. UNCG struck again at 35:24 on a header by Egill Atlason. Jones earned an assist on the play, giving the visiting team a 2-0 lead at halftime.

Greensboro started off the second half much the same way it began the game, scoring early with a goal at 46:38 when Mike Richardson fired an unassisted one-timer from the left of the box. The Spartans tallied their final goal at the 58:58 mark when James Goodman found Phil Long on a short cross to the top of the box.

Radford tallied six shots, seven saves, one corner kick and seven fouls. UNC Greensboro had 13 shots, nine corner kicks, three saves and 10 fouls. UNCG’s Tristian Tulloch replaced stater Jay Benfield in net for the final 31 minutes of the game.

The Highlanders will open the regular season next Wednesday at Elon at 4:00 pm. RU returns home to face Charlotte Sept. 4 at 7:00 pm. UNCG will open the regular season at home against Virginia Tech next Wednesday at 7:00 pm.
