Radford, Va.--A pair of goals by Brent Dillie helped Virginia Tech retain the “New River Rock” with a 3-0 victory over Radford from Patrick D. Cupp Memorial Stadium this evening. The Highlanders fall to 1-2-3, while the Hokies even their record at 4-4.
In the first half, Dillie sent the Hokies into the locker room with a 1-0 lead, netting a goal on a corner kick with just 2:40 remaining in the period. On the goal, Magnus Einarsson’s service into the box was flicked by Greg Roach to Dillie, who one-timed it inside the left post from 10 yards out.
Dillie made it 2-0 on a corner kick in the 57th minute. He again one-timed a service from Einarsson far post past RU keeper Omar Zinoveev (Young, Uraguay). For the match, the Hokies had seven corner kicks compared to just two for the Highlanders, both coming in the final minute of play.
Tech added an insurance goal in the 82nd minute. After a scramble in the box following a save by Zinoveev, Marcus Reed corralled the loose ball and rifled the ball from 12-yards out in to the back of the net for the final tally of the night.
The Highlanders were outshot 12-5. Zinoveev finished the night with five saves, with VT’s Chase Harrison stopping to shots to earn the shutout.
The Highlanders head to Longwood for their next match on Sept. 28 at 7 p.m.
