Highlanders Score Tie With Charlotte

RADFORD, Va.--For the second year in a row, a Radford versus Charlotte men’s soccer game ended in a deadlock. RU tied the 49ers 1-1 Saturday night at Patrick D. Cupp Memorial Stadium. (Box Score)

The Highlanders played Charlotte to a 2-2 tie in Charlotte last season. Both teams moved to 1-0-1 on the year.

Radford appeared to win the evenly matched contest during the first of the two sudden death overtime periods. Junior Patrick Colas (Rennes, France) put the ball in net with two seconds remaining in the period, but he was ruled offsides.

Ironically, RU’s goal came with two seconds in the first half. Junior Fernando Ramos (Stafford, Va.) took a pass from Sean Johnson in the center of the box with a defender playing close man defense. Ramos wheeled around on the defender and blasted a shot into the upper half of the net to give the Highlanders a 1-0 edge at the half.

Charlotte struck back at 69:22 when Adam Ruud (Hanover Park, Ill.) got the ball on a breakaway and dribbled past RU goalkeeper Omar Zinoveev (Young, Uraguay) for the score, knotting the game at one.

Radford held the advantage in shots, tallying 11 to Charlotte’s seven. The 49ers took five corner kicks and made seven saves while RU had four corner kicks and Zinoveev registered five saves.

RU will take a week off, returning to action next Saturday when it hosts George Washington at 7:00 pm. Charlotte will play at Winthrop on Tuesday at 7:00 pm.
