Radford Ties Appalachian State

BOONE, N.C.--Radford men's soccer remained undefeated through five games, registering a 1-1 non-conference tie at Appalachian State Wednesday night at Kidd Brewer Stadium. (box score)

The tie was RU's fourth of the season, as the Highlanders moved to 6-3-4. The team record for ties in a season is five. It marks the second straight season the Highs have posted a five-game unbeaten streak. The Mountaineers move to 6-6-2.

Radford's tally came just four seconds before the end of the first half. With a stopped clock at the 0:08 mark, David Stannard (Richmond, Va.) took a free kick from 30 yards out, which Patrick Colas (Rennes, France) headed past Cavicchia to give Radford a 1-0 halftime advantage.

ASU freshman Corey Lugger (Irmo, S.C.) registered his second goal of the year in the 66th minute to help the Mountaineers battle back from a 1-0 halftime deficit. Lugger’s equalizer was set-up by a punt from goalie Philip Cavicchia (Brampton, Ont.) and a pass from Naeem Frederick (Arima, Trinidad). The assist was Cavicchia’s first as a Mountaineer.

Appalachian outshot Radford 23 to nine in the match, including a 19 to five advantage in the second half and both overtime periods. The Highlanders’ Omar Zinoveev was active in the net, however, saving 10 ASU shots. Cavicchia gathered four saves for the Mountaineers.
