Highlanders Edge George Mason RADFORD, Va.--George Mason University's men's soccer team (6-7-1) fell to Radford (6-3-3) by a score of 2-1 in a non-conference match-up Sunday afternoon at George Mason Stadium. (Box Score) Junior midfielder Fernando Ramos (Stafford, Va.) opened up the scoring for the Highlanders at the 6:51 mark as he shot a low-level laser to the bottom left corner off of a throw-in from the left side of the field. Midfielder Matt Mendy responded in the 14th minute as he headed the ball off of a corner kick from senior Danny Climo and watched it sail past Radford senior goalkeeper Omar Zinoveev to tie up the game. The final goal of the contest came in the 62nd minute as Radford freshman midfielder David Stannard (Richmond, Va.) took a hard shot off of a free kick to send the ball into the lower left corner of the net past the Patriots’ senior goalkeeper John O’Hara. Mendy led the Patriots in shots with five, while Climo chipped in with a team second-best three shots. The Patriots outshot the Highlanders, 18-14, and Mason took eight corner kicks on the afternoon to Radford’s one. O’Hara saw action in the net all 90 minutes for the Patriots and amassed six saves, while giving up two goals against the Higlanders. Junior Omar Zinoveev (Young, Uraguay) collected seven saves and allowed one goal on the afternoon for Radford. The Patriots play their next four games on the road with the first at William & Mary in Williamsburg, Va. on Oct. 22 at 7 p.m. |
