Radford Takes Fourth Straight From Virginia Tech, 2-0

RADFORD - The Radford Highlanders knocked off Virginia Tech 2-0 Tuesday evening in men's soccer action at the Dedmon Center Stadium.

It is the fourth consecutive year that the Highlanders (2-1) have beaten Virginia Tech in the battle for "The New River Rock." RU now leads the series with Tech 7-5-1.

Tuesday's match remained scoreless until RU's T.J. Rolfing knocked in a rebound off Hokies goalie Colin Kibler with 6:33 left in the contest. In the 85th minute, Michael Von Essen took a cross from Jon Frias to give the Highlanders a commanding lead.

RU pressured Kibler all night forcing him to make 10 saves. The Highlanders outshot Virginia Tech 19-9.

It is the first time since 1990 that RU has shut out the Hokies (1-1).

The intense rivalry featured four yellow cards for RU and seven yellow cards for the Hokies. The Hokies were forced to play a man down after Michael DeTomo received his second yellow card in the 80th minute.

The game was originally scheduled to be played at Virginia Tech but poor field conditions forced the game to be moved to Radford.

The Highlanders return to action Friday night with a match at Dedmon Center Stadium against Carson-Newman College starting at 7:30 p.m.
