Radford Knocks off No. 5 Duke 3-2

DURHAM, N.C. - The Radford University Highlanders scored three goals in the first 32 minutes of action en route to a 3-2 victory over the No. 5 Duke Blue Devils on Wednesday evening in Durham, N.C. The Blue Devils entered the season as the pre-season No. 1 and finished the 1999 campaign with No. 1 in the final national ranking.

The Highlanders (4-4) came out strong notching a goal in the fourth minute of play by Geraldo Hernandez off an assist from T.J. Rolfing and never looked back.

Mike Van Essen and Ryan Caton each added goals in the first half which saw Radford dominate play outshooting Duke 8-6.

The second half did take on a different look as Duke (5-3) came out with a lot of firepower and creative ideas in the form of sophomore midfielder Trevor Perea. Perea got Duke in the scoring column in the 51st minute with a blast from the middle of the penalty area. Six minutes later Perea scored his second goal of the year and gave Duke some hope of a comeback. The Blue Devils outshot the Highlanders 18-2 in the second half.

Radford went into a Bunker style defense and after six more quality chances on goal the Blue Devils ran out of ideas and time against the stingy Radford side. Mike Dramby picked up the victory in goal for the Highlanders, while Scott Maslin picked up the loss for the Blue Devils allowing all three goals. The loss breaks a 23-match home regular season win streak for Duke.
