Summers Claims Medalist Honors To Pace Radford to Record Finish

RADFORD, Va.-- Radford senior Aaron Summers (Floyd, Va.) took home medalist honors last weekend with a 138 (69-69) at the Western Carolina Intercollegiate in Cashiers, N.C. Summers paced the Highlanders to a record team finish of 576 (292-284), good for second place just six strokes behind Charleston Southern.

Summers won a playoff against Keith Tyburski of Western Carolina, who also finished with a 138. RU freshman Hampton Ballard (Pearisburg, Va.) shot a 141 (71-70) to finish tied for fourth overall. Sophomore Robert Nuon (Centreville, Va.) tied for 11th overall with a 146 (75-71). Freshman Nick Little (Crozet, Va.) tied for 30th, shooting a 152 (78-74). Griffith Hunter rounded out the Radford finishers with 158 (77-81), good for 42nd overall.

It was the second consecutive strong showing for Radford’s men’s golf team, which finished third overall in the Wild Wing Tournament, Oct. 29-31. The Radford Highlanders posted a two-day total of 602.

Radford’s top finishers’ at Wild Wing were Nuon and Hunter. Nuon took home 11th place with a score of 149 (75-74). Hunter finished with a 151 (74-77) tying for 14th overall.

Summers, junior Chris Bagg (Christiansburg, Va.) and Ballard tied for 24th in the tournament. Summers finished at 154 (82-72), Bagg finished at 154 (79-75) and Ballard finished at 154 (76-78).

The top team in the event was Western Carolina finishing with a 587 (285-302) to earn first place. Donald Morrow of Western Carolina finished with a 140 (68-72), to claim medalist honors.

The two tournaments wrapped up Radford’s fall schedule. The Highlander will begin spring play in search of their first-ever Big South title.
