WINTHROP HOLDS OFF RADFORD

ROCK HILL, S.C. ­ Greg Lewis scored 19 points and Winthrop held off a furious Radford comeback attempt for an 81-78 win in Big South Conference basketball action.

With the score knotted at 35 early in the second half, the Eagles went on a 25-6 run to push their lead to 60-41 with 11:57 remaining the in the game. Fueled by a pressing defense that forced nine Winthrop turnovers in the second half, the Highlanders clawed their way back into the game.

RU made six consecutive shots, including a pair of 3-pointers by Peanut Arrington, cut the Eagles lead to 66-59 with 8:30 remaining the contest. The Highlanders eventually closed to within 73-72 on a Correy Watkins jumper with 1:48 remaining but RU would get no closer.

Lewis and Roger Toxey scored consecutive baskets to push Winthrop's lead to five. With two seconds remaining the game, Tyson Waterman was whistled for a technical foul. Byron Hall drained the two free throws to make the score 81-78 and the Highlanders maintained possession of the ball because of the technical but were unable to get a shot off.

Jason Williams scored a game high 26 points and grabbed eight boards for RU. The surging Ryan Charles made 9-of-13 shots and scored 20 points and Correy Watkins finished the contest with 14 points and 13 rebounds, eight of which were offensive.
