BROWN, FIU STUN HIGHLANDERS 75-73
MIAMI, Fla. - Jabahri Brown scored on an alley-oop with 0.8 seconds remaining
to give FIU a stunning 75-73 win against Radford in the first round of the
FIU Tip-Off Tournament Friday night.
After Correy Watkins made 1-of-2 free throws with 3:09 remaining, RU
led 73-60 and seemed to have the game in hand. But a Carlos Arroyo jumper
and four quick points by Brown cut the RU lead to 73-66, and Marshod Fairweather
drained a 3-pointer and was fouled by RU's Rian Everett. Fairweather, who
was 0-of-9 from behind the arc to that point, drained the free throw and
cut the FIU deficit to three with 1:40 remaining in the contest. (box score)
The Highlanders ended their next three possessions with turnovers and
the Golden Panthers were finally able to capitalize when Fairweather hit
two free throws to make the score 73-72 with 35 seconds remaining in the
game.
RU's Jason Williams missed the front end of the 1-and-1 and FIU regained
possession of the ball. A foul on the Highlanders sent Arroyo to the line
and he made the first shot to knot the game. Arroyo missed his second attempt,
but the ball went out of bounds off of RU and the Golden Panthers retained
possession to set the stage for Brown's heroics.
The final three minutes of the game overshadowed what had been a very
good RU performance. Jason Williams scored all 18 of his points in the first
half to give the Highlanders a 38-26 lead at the break. Williams was limited
by a sprained ankle in the second half and is doubtful for Saturday's game
with Boston.
RU led by as much as 14 points in the second half and answered numerous
FIU runs until the closing minutes. Ryan Charles finished the game with
18 points and he grabbed a career high nine rebounds.
