WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- The Mayor of the City of Winston-Salem (N.C.), Allen Joines proclaimed Byron Samuels Day, on Friday, June 28, 2002. Samuels was in town holding a youth basketball clinic at the Reynolds Recreation Center.
Giving back to the community that I grew up in, is very gratifying, said Samuels. It reminds me of who I am and where I came from and how I got here. It makes me mindful of how people helped me get where I am, added Samuels. I still have family and friends in Winston-Salem, so giving back and helping people in the (Winston-Salem) community is like helping family.
Samuels, the head mens basketball coach at Radford University, is a native of Winston-Salem, N.C. and is a graduate of North Forsyth High School.
As an educator and basketball coach, working with young people has given me the most joy. The enthusiasm and energy of the kids at Reynolds Recreation center overwhelmed me. Id like to thank Brian McCorkle and his staff for the opportunity to give back to the Winston-Salem community.
