Shawn Hindy, a member of the United States Indoor and Outdoor National Teams, begins his second season as an assistant coach with the Radford field hockey program.He has enjoyed an extensive playing career which includes a current 10-year spell on the National Team and stints with international club teams. Named the 2000, 2002 & 2004 U.S. Field Hockey Male Athlete of the Year, Hindy has made 35 International Caps during his current career, scoring 19 goals. This past February, he spent time as an assistant coach for the U-21 team at the junior Pan-American Games in Cuba. Head coach Jeff Woods is familiar with Hindy, dating back when Woods coached him on the 1995 Olympic Festival team, playing in Boulder, Colo. A native of Westlake Village, Calif., Hindy took up the sport at the age of 12 after seeing the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. He was named to the U-21 squad in 1993. After two-years on the U-21 team, he was called up to the National Team in 1995. In 1996, he competed at the Pan American Junior Championships and the World Cup Qualifying Tournament in Cagliari, Italy and was an alternate for the U.S. Olympic team. He helped the team to fifth place finishes at the 1999 Pan American Games and the 2000 Pan American Cup and a second at the 2003 Pan American Cup Qualifying Tournament. He also took part in the first Indoor World Cup in Leipzig, Germany in 2003. As well as a member of the National Team, he played club hockey overseas, competing in Australia for the South Perth Wasps in 1998 and in Spain for the University of Alicante in 2000. He recently graduated from San Diego State this spring with a degree in financial services and a minor in Spanish. |
