Highlanders Shutout by #10 Duke, 2-0

Durham, N.C. - Radford University (5-8) was shutout 2-0 by 10th-ranked Duke University in field hockey action from Williams Field. Stacey Tsougas and Kim Van Kirk provided the Blue Devils goals. Keeper Tina Caiazza (Fairfax, Va.) kept the Highlanders in the game, making eight saves in defeat.

Tsougas started the scoring at the 24:03 mark when she collected a Gracie Sorbello pass and pushed it by Caiazza for the 1-0 advantage. Duke entered the half with the one goal lead, having out shot the Highlanders, 9-1, in the opening 35 minutes of play.

The Blue Devils extended the lead to 2-0 less than three minutes into the second half when Van Kirk redirected a bounding ball from Jessica Fluck into the back of the net for her team-high ninth goal of the season. Van Kirk currently leads Duke with 23 points on the season.

Duke controlled the ball for much of the contest, out shooting Radford, 13-6 and held the advantage in penalty corners, 18-3. Christy Morgan and Erica Perrier split time in goal for the Blue Devils as the team registered its sixth shutout of the season.

Radford returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 26 when they host Davidson in a key NorPac matchup at 1 p.m. The teams are tied for first at 3-1 in the East Division.
