Kent Hires Schaffner As Assistant Baseball Coach RADFORD, Va.--Radford University baseball coach Lew Kent announced today that he has tabbed Chip Schaffner as assistant baseball coach. Schaffner, whose primary duties will involve serving as the team’s pitching coach, joins the Highlanders after spending three years as the pitching coach at the University of Virginia. The Cavalier pitching staff finished 11th in the country and second in the Atlantic Coast Conference among all NCAA Division I schools under Schaffner’s tutelage in 2003. While at UVa., he was also responsible for the team’s travel and finances as well as serving as the BIV Camp Coordinator. He will echo some of those duties at Radford, assisting with travel and recruiting. “We’re extremely fortunate to have someone of Chip’s experience on board. This is a big boost to our program,” Kent said. “He’s experienced in a lot of areas, but his main focus will be pitching and hitting.” Prior to Virginia, Schaffner was the pitching coach and head recruiter for Georgetown College in Georgetown, Ky. That followed a six-year stint as the sole proprietor of The Bull Pen, a baseball school for kids aged 7 to 17. He also spent time as the assistant baseball coach at Wright State University. Schaffner also spent eight years in the United States Army prior to entering the coaching ranks. He was highly decorated by the time he was discharged in 1992. He received undergraduate education from both Michigan State and Wright State, and will work toward completing his degree at Radford. Schaffner replaces former pitching coach Robert Brown, who left RU this past summer. |
