South Carolina Stymies Highlanders

COLUMBIA, S.C. -- Cory Vanderhook and Ryan Mahoney homered in a six-run fourth inning Saturday to lead South Carolina to a 16-4 win over Radford in game two of the three-game baseball series. (Box Score)

The seventh ranked Gamecocks improved to 5-0 with the Saturday win while Radford dropped to 1-4 on the season.

Senior right-hander Zac McCamie pitched the first five innings to earn his second win of the season. He allowed four hits, one unearned run and struck out seven without walking a batter. Wynn Pelzer allowed two hits over two scoreless innings, John Gregory gave up three earned runs in an inning and Josh McDonald pitched a hitless ninth.

Radford starter junior Justin Morgan lasted 3 2/3 innings. He gave up 10 hits and nine runs, eight earned, and walked one batter with no strikeouts. Morgan's record dropped to 0-2.

Radford took a brief lead with an unearned first inning run but South Carolina countered with two runs in the bottom of the inning. Senior Alan Ashworth singled, moved to second base on a muffed pickoff attempt, and scored on a base hit by senior Kellen Wohlford.

The Gamecocks quickly regained the lead when Davy Gregg walked, and Michael Campbell beat out a bunt. Gregg moved to third on a fly out and scored on Vanderhnook's sacrifice fly. Jon Willard drove in Campbell with a base hit.

South Carolina added one run in the third inning to lead 3-1 and sent 10 batters to the plate in the fourth with six hits including two run home runs by Vanderhook and Mahoney, the first of the year for both players.

South Carolina added three runs in the fifth, three more in the sixth and closed out its scoring with a run in the eighth inning.

Three hits, including a double by senior Mark Fleisher, and a walk produced Radford's three eighth inning runs.

Vanderhook drove in four runs with his homer, a sacrifice fly and an infield out. Davy Gregg had three RBI with a double, bases loaded walk and an infield out. Mahoney, Steven Tolleson and Mark Stanley had two RBI each.

Campbell, who has had multiple hits in each of the first five games this season, had two hits Saturday. Gregg, Willard, Mahoney and Tommy King also had two hits. Both of King's hits were doubles. Gregg, Campbell, Mahoney and Joey Friddle also had doubles.

Ashworth, Wohlford and Fleisher each had two of Radford's nine hits.

The final game of the series is scheduled for 1:30 p.m., Sunday at Sarge Frye Field. Mark Fleisher (1-0) will be on the mound for the Highlanders. South Carolina's scheduled starting pitcher is sophomore left-hander Forrest Beverly (0-0).
