Highlanders Cruise Past Richmond RICHMOND, Va. -- Radford baseball used timely hits and took advantge of three Richmond errors to beat the Spiders, 10-3, Monday afternoon. The loss drops the Spiders to 18-26 overall, while Radford runs its record to 12-31 on the season. (Box Score) Justin Tubb picked up his third win of the year, throwing seven innings, allowing two runs on nine hits. Derek Creger pitched the final two innings, allowing one run on one hit. UR's Tim Rice made his first start of the season and allowed three runs on three hits while fanning three. Left fielder Kellen Wohlford pushed RU's first run across with an RBI single that scored third baseman Jesse Ross. Richmond tied it in the bottom of the first when first baseman Joe Mahoney tallied the game-tying RBI that scored centerfielder Ben Zeskind. The Highlanders recorded two more runs in the second to take the lead for good. A bunt by shortstop Ben Toth scored right fielder Matt Mantione. Catcher Nachion Moore then scampered home after stealing third on an errant throw by the catcher. The Spiders posted another run in the fourth when designated hitter Ryan Metzroth scored on an infield single from catcher Hank Coogan. Radford came back to score three in the top half of the fifth. Wohlford crossed the plate on a passed ball for the first run. Centerfielder Steve Mignogna and Ben Toth each hit RBI singles that scored designated hitter Nate Toth and Mignogna respectively. First baseman Mark Fleisher then hit his seventh homer of the year, a solo shot, in the sixth. Moore then scored again in the seventh, advancing to third on a single by Ben Toth and reaching home on a fielding error. Nate Toth then hit his second home run of his career, a two-run shot in the ninth that scored Wohlford for the final two Radford runs. The Spiders scored their final run of the game in the bottom of the eighth on a sacrifice fly from freshman Joe White. Ben Toth had the most productive day of his young career, posintg a 4-for-5 performance with two RBI. Brother Nate was 2-for-4 with two RBI. The Toth brothers accounted for seven of RU's 10 runs. The teams will square off for the last time this season Tuesday at 2:00 pm game. |
