Highlanders Fall To Birmingham-Southern

RADFORD, Va. -- Designated hitted Mac Godwin hit two home runs to propel Birmingham-Southern to a 21-3 Big South Conference win over Radford baseball Saturday afternoon at Dedmon Center Park.(Box Score)

Birmingham-Southern (28-15; 13-4 Big South), who tallied one run in the second on a RBI-single by third baseman Pat Mizerany, scored eight runs in the fourth to extend its lead. The Panthers collected six hits in the fourth and had 10 base runners in the inning.

BSC struck again in sixth, scoring two runs on Godwin’s first homer, a shot to centerfield that scored right fielder Casey Bond. The Panthers also tallied five runs in both the seventh and ninth innings on a combined nine hits in the two innings. Godwin, who was a triple shy of hitting for the cycle, hit his second home run in the ninth, a solo shot to right center.

Radford (11-30; 6-11) scored its first run in the sixth inning, scoring on a RBI-single by first baseman Mark Fleisher that plated second baseman Alan Ashworth.

RU scored twice more in the bottom of the eighth, beginning with a two-out double by Ashworth that scored third baseman Jesse Ross. Fleisher then singled to left, scoring Ashworth.

Starter David Horne earned the win for BSC, throwing seven innings, allowing four hits and one run. Radford starter Justin Morgan took the loss, pitching 3 2/3 innings, surrendering eight runs on seven hits. Both starters struck out three batters.

Fleisher led Radford at the plate, posting a 3-for-4 performance with two RBI. Ross and Ashworth each had two hits for the Highlanders with Ashworth tallying one RBI.

Godwin was 5-for-6 with five RBI to lead Birmingham-Southern. Left fielder Billy Froehlich went 3-for-4 with two RBI. In all, six BSC batters had at least two hits and four had two or more RBI.

The two teams will complete the three-game Big South series Sunday at 1:00 pm at Dedmon Center Park.
