Radford Drops Pitchers’ Duel To Birmingham-Southern RADFORD, Va. -- Birmingham-Southern scored two runs in the fourth inning to take the lead, and then two more in the fifth to secure a 5-2 Big South win over Radford Friday afternoon at Dedmon Center Park.(Box Score) The pitchers’ duel saw both starters go the distance. Brandon Hynick (7-3) picked up the win by allowing two runs (one earned) on nine hits while striking out eight batters. Radford’s Justin Tubb (2-5) surrendered five runs (four earned) on nine hits. Tubb struck out seven batters while taking the loss. Radford took an early 1-0 lead when third baseman Jesse Ross singled up the middle in the first inning to reach base and then was plated by single up the middle by second baseman Alan Ashworth. The Panthers (27-15; 12-4 Big South) tied the game on a RBI double to left by left fielder Billy Froehlich that scored second baseman Jonathan Sanford. Catcher Blake Burton then gave BSC the lead with a single that scored Froehlich. Birmingham-Southern struck again in the fifth inning, scoring on a double by centerfielder Scott Billak that plated shortstop Matt Barber. A Sanford ground-out then scored Billak. The Panthers final run came on a solo home run by first baseman Adam Tucker in the eighth. Radford (11-29; 6-10 Big South) added one more run in the bottom of the ninth when designated hitter Aaron Ranft reached on a fielder’s choice that scored pinch runner Nachion Moore. The Highlanders, who left seven runners on base in the game, were unable to score again, giving BSC the win. Catcher Nate Toth and centerfielder Steve Mignogna each had two hits for Radford, with Toth posting a 2-for-3 performance. Ashworth and Ranft each collected on RBI. Burton was 2-for-4 with one RBI to lead the Panthers. Billak, Sanford, Froehlich and Tucker each recorded one RBI as well. The two teams will continue the three-game Big South series Saturday at 1:00 pm at Dedmon Center Park. |
