Radford Rallies To Split Doubleheader

ASHEVILLE, N.C. -- Radford baseball rallied in game two, overcoming a nine-run deficit en route to splitting a Big South doubleheader at UNC Asheville Sunday afternoon. RU won game two 13-10 after dropping the first game 6-4 at Greenwood Field. (Game 1 Box Score) (Game 2 Box Score)

The Bulldogs scored one in the third, five in the fourth, and three in the
sixth to build a 9-0 lead in game two. The fourth was highlighted by two-RBI triples by both Kevin Mattison and Tony Campana who extended his hitting streak to 16-straight games. Campana added a two-RBI single in the sixth to give him four RBI in the game. He went 8-for-15 in the series.

The Highlanders scored 13 runs in the final three innings off the UNCA
bullpen. Kellen Wohlford went 3-for-6 with six RBI in the game. All six of his RBI came in his final three at bats including the game-winning bases clearing double that broke the 10-10 tie in the ninth. Jesse Ross went 5-for-6 with three RBI.

Radford was down to its last strike with one on and two out in the ninth
trailing 10-8, when pinch hitter Jonathan Spears singled. Ross also had two
strikes before singling up the middle to score pinch-runner Steve Mignonga. Alan Ashworth doubled home Spears to tie the game. After an intentional walk to Mark Fleisher loaded the bases, Wohlford doubled home all three runners.

Josh Deaver picked up the win in relief throwing three innings only giving up one run on one hit to move to 1-2 on the year. Alan DeRatt took the loss in relief to fall to 1-8.

Elliott Arrington went 3-for-4 with an RBI in game one to lead UNC Asheville to the win. UNCA (11-28, 3-15 Big South) scored five runs in the first inning of game one. Tony Wall laid down a successful squeeze bunt to score Campana with the game’s first run. Arrington followed with a RBI single to score Josh Coyle. After a walk to Justin Wilkins, Mattison tripled to score Arrington and Wilkins and then scored on a wild pitch to give starter Ben Buchanan all the run support he would need.

The Bulldogs added a run in the fourth. John Whited walked to lead off and would eventually score on a sacrifice fly by Ben Kerr to make it 6-0.

Radford (11-27, 6-9 Big South) scored two in the fifth and two in the sixth. Ross and Ashworth had RBI singles in the fifth and Matt Mantione had a sacrifice fly in the sixth after an error allowed the third run to score.

Buchanan pitched 7.1 innings giving up four runs on nine hits to improve to 3-3 on the season. Chris Nigro came on in the eighth and pitched the last 1.2 retiring all five batters he faced for his first save of the season. Fleisher took the loss to fall to 3-6.

Asheville will travel to Gardner-Webb on Tuesday for a 3 p.m. game while
Radford travels to ETSU on Wednesday for a 3 p.m. game.
