Fleisher's Heroics Give Radford Doubleheader Sweep

CHARLESTON, S.C. -- Radford's Mark Fleisher delivered a two-out, three-run homerun in the top of the ninth inning to spark the Highlanders to an 8-7 win over Charleston Southern, giving Radford a doubleheader sweep of the Buccaneers in Big South Conference baseball action on Saturday. Radford, who scored its first two League wins of the year, improves to 7-18 overall and 2-4 in the Big South while Charleston Southern drops to 17-13 overall, 5-7 in the league. CSU won game one of the series, 4-0, on Friday.

Fleisher’s late game heroics made a winner of Cory Koliscak (1-0), who pitched 2 2/3 innings of relief to earn the victory. CSU’s second pitcher, Bobby Parnell (3-4) took the loss after allowing three hits with two outs in the top of the ninth inning.

With two out and nobody on in the ninth, Radford’s game-winning rally began with Alan Ashworth’s infield single over the head of first baseman Graham Maiden. Kellen Wohlford followed with a double down the third base line, setting the stage for Radford’s leading homerun hitter and run producer.

Ashworth finished game two with four hits and two RBI, adding two hits in game one of the set. Fleisher finished the day with five RBI total while Wohlford had four hits in the doubleheader and six hits in the three-game series.

Radford used a six-run outburst in the fifth inning to secure the victory in game one on Saturday. The Highlanders used five hits and took advantage of three CSU errors to open a 6-1 lead. Aaron Ranft delivered two-run single and Wohlford added an RBI triple to spark the big inning.

Wohlford finished with three hits in game one while Ranft had three RBI in the first game.

Radford starter Justin Morgan (2-4) scattered eight hits and allowed two earned runs over eight innings to earn the game one victory. Brad Bissell (2-4) took the loss, allowing eight runs (two earned) over 5 2/3 innings.

CSU centerfielder Jordan Haar picked up five hits on the day, becoming the school’s all-time hit leader with an infield single in the third inning of game two. Haar, also CSU’s career homerun and RBI leader, now has 236 career hits.

Senior second baseman Drew Grosse has three hits and three RBI in game two of the doubleheader while leftfielder Justin Fyle had a pair of singles.

CSU returns to action on Wednesday at Furman before traveling to High Point next weekend.
