Yale Edges Radford Baseball DURHAM, N.C. -- Yale scored two runs in the top of the seventh to break open a tie and defeat Radford baseball 5-3 Tuesday afternoon at Jack Coombs Field at Duke University. Four of the Bulldogs' five runs were unearned. (Box Score) Took the lead in the seventh when shortstop Chris Esper, who had been moved into scoring position by a single by second baseman Justin Ankney, crossed home courtesy of a couple of passed balls and a wild pitch. Third baseman Matt Stone then hit a sacrifice fly to drive in Ankney. Yale opened the scoring in the second when right fielder Mike Gulker reached on a throwing error. Catcher Eric Rasmussen then hit a two-out homer to left field, scoring Gulker. Left fielder C.J. Orrico tripled to left center, and then tallied the Bulldogs’ third run because of a throwing error. Radford evened things up in the third when centerfielder Steve Mignogna doubled down the right field line, and then advanced to third on a throwing error. Second baseman Alan Ashworth reached on an error that allowed Mignogna to score. First baseman Fleisher singled up the middle, moving Ashworth to second. Left fielder Kellen Wohlford then singled to left field and advanced to second on an error that allowed both Fleisher and Ashworth to score. Southpaw Derek Creger took the loss for the Highlanders, allowing two runs (one earned) on one hit. Starter Justin Tubb went six innings, allowing three runs, all unearned, on five hits. Yale starter Jon Hollins went the distance, allowing three runs (one earned) on eight hits. He struck out nine batters. Wohlford led RU at the plate, posting a 2-of-3 performance with one RBI. Mignogna also had two hits. Rasmussen paced the Bulldogs with a 3-for-4 day at the plate, including two RBI. The teams combined for six errors and six unearned runs. The Highlanders fall to 2-12 with the loss and will play Duke tomorrow at 1:00 pm at Duke. The Bulldogs are now 3-7 and will also remain in Durham for another game, facing Navy Wednesday at 4:00 pm. |
