Highlanders Fall To Winthrop In 11th RADFORD, Va.--Winthrop designated hitter Kyle Roberson led off the 11th inning with a home run to beat Radford 2-1 in a Big South extra-inning baseball game Friday night at The Winthrop Ballpark. (Box Score) The loss, which drops RU to 20-24 overall, 11-8 in the Big South, is the fifth straight for the Highlanders. Winthrop improves to 31-19 overall, 13-6 in League play. Roberson's shot to left field broke up what had been a pitchers duel for most of the night. The teams gave up a combined 12 hits and three runs. Bret Lieberman (2-4) took the loss for RU. He faced one batter. Radford starter Justin Morgan went 6 1/3 innings, giving up one earned runs on five hits. Reliever Cory Koliscak went 3 2/3 innings allowing two hits and no runs. Jon Wilson (9-0) got the win for the Eagles. He threw 4 1/3 innings allowing two hits. He took over for starter Mike Honce, who threw 6 2/3 innings, allowing one earned run on two hits. Winthrop's first run came in the bottom of the fourth when centerfielder Tommy Lentz sacrificed home shortstop Matt Repec, who reached on a single. Radford got the run back in the top of the fifth when catcher Dean Altavilla singled to centerfield to score first baseman Mark Fleisher, who reached on a walk. The score remained 1-1 until Roberson's dinger in the 11th. Fleisher led RU with a 2-for-3 performance at the plate. Roberson was 2-for-2 with one RBI to lead the Eagles. The teams will resume the series tomorrow. First pitch is set for 2:00 pm |
