Tubb, Baseball Baffle No. 13 Richmond, 13-3

RADFORD, Va. - Radford University’s Justin Tubb (Danville, Va.) remained perfect on the season, tossing a complete game to baffle No. 13 University of Richmond, 13-3 in non-conference baseball action Tuesday afternoon at Dedmon Center Park. (Box Score)

Richmond (39-9) plated single runs in each of the first three innings and that was all they could muster off Radford starter Tubb as the sophomore right hander improved to 6-0 on the season, allowing just three runs, on nine hits, in eight innings to lead the Highlanders to victory. Matt McLoughlin (4-3) took the loss for the Spiders allowing four runs on eight hits in five innings.

Radford (11-23) sent 10 batters to the plate, belting seven hits and scoring six runs in the bottom of the eighth, forcied the 10-run rule and halting the game with two outs and runners on second and third. In the RU eighth, the Highlanders used three straight singles to lead off the inning, and a two-run single up the middle by Ryan Wetzel to break the game open.

RU junior shortstop Stuart Ritchie went 4-for-5 on the afternoon, as all nine Highlander starters each had a hit in the victory. Kellen Wohlford collected three singles and three RBI on the afternoon to help the Highlander cause. Jim Fasano went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and two RBI for Richmond.

An RBI single in the first by Spider first baseman Jim Fasano down the right field line scored Bryan Pritz from second giving Richmond a 1-0 lead after a half of inning. Richmond doubled their advantage in the second, as Bobby LeNoir grounded into a double play with the bases loaded scoring Michael Galligan from third making it 2-0 Spiders.

Radford countered in the bottom of the third, taking a 3-2 lead. Matt Mantione started off things for the Highlanders with an RBI single off the pitchers glove, and Steve Mignogna and Alan Ashworth each added RBI groundouts.

Zestkind and Fasano each doubled to lead off the Richmond third, Fasano’s picked up Zestkind from second tying the game 3-3. Shaun House snapped the 3-3 tied for the Highlanders in the fifth, driving in Ritchie from second.

After Tubb was able to work out of a bases loaded jam in the top of the sixth, when Bryan Pritz worked the count full before flying to left to end the threat, RU added a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth highlighted by Kellen Wohlford’s two-RBI single to right-center to give RU a 6-3 lead.

The Highlanders travel across town to face Virginia Tech Thursday, before hosting Birmingham-Southern College for a three game series starting Friday at 3 p.m.
