Highlander Baseball Win Series With Doubleheadder Split Charleston Southern RADFORD, Va. -- Radford (10-19, 5-9), behind a strong pitching performance from Mark Fleisher, came back to win game two, 8-2, taking the three-game series, two games to one after R.J. Swindle led Charleston Southern Buccaneers to a 10-1 win over visiting Radford University in the first game of a Big South Conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon. Radford bounced back to take game two, 8-2, behind Fleisher's six innings of work in which he allowed five hits and pitched out of several jams. Fleisher improved to 2-2 on the season with the win and contributed offensively with a pair of hits and two RBI. Second baseman Alan Ashworth added three hits and two RBI, while catcher Dean Altavilla delivered two runs with a single in the Highlanders' six-run fourth inning. Radford overcame an early 2-1 deficit with the explosive fourth, sending CSU starter Robert Parnell (2-3) to defeat. Thacker had two more hits for the Buccaneers, giving him five on the day and six in the three-game series. Swindle (7-4) scattered three hits and struck out nine in tossing his third consecutive complete game and winning his sixth straight decision. Swindle did not allow an earned run, extending his streak to 30 consecutive innings without an earned run. Swindle now has 107 strikeouts this season, tops in the Big South Conference and moved to fourth-place on the CSU all-time strikeout list with 234 career strikeouts. Junior catcher Scott Thacker led the offense for the Bucs, picking up three hits and a pair of RBI. Shortstop Billy Dalton added two hits and two RBI with second baseman Brad Woods picking up a pair of RBI as well. Radford starter Jason Deaver (1-6) took the loss for Radford, allowing nine runs (four earned) over 4 2/3 innings. |
