Birmingham-Southern Posts Big Innings, as Panthers Get Revenge, 27-7 in Baseball

RADFORD, Va. - Birmingham Southern College used six runs in the second, exploded for 11 in the fifth and added six in the seventh for a season high run and hit output in taking game two, 27-7 Saturday afternoon in baseball action at Dedmon Center Park. (Box Score)

In the Birmingham-Southern sixth, the Panthers (33-17) sent 15 batters to the plate, scoring 11 runs on seven hits, four of which were doubles, in breaking the game open. In that frame, Michael Cline collected a single, double and two RBI and Scott Asher and Matt Barber each drove in two, as 11 of the fist 12 batters scored.

All nine BSC starters collected a hit, led by Barber who went 3-for-5 with a pair of two-RBI singles and five RBI. Adam Pease added three hits and four RBI while, Cline posted three hits in four trips with a pair of doubles and two RBI.

Josh Britnell (6-1) worked five innings to earn the victory scattering five run on five hits. Brian Williamson (1-4) in a spot start suffered the loss yielding eight runs on eight hits in four innings. Reliever Justin Morgan was hit just as hard, allowing 11 earned runs on eight hits in just 2.1 innings of work.

Offensively for Radford (12-25), Alan Ashworth collected three hits, while Steve Mignona had a pair of singles.

The Highlanders got on the board first pushing a single run across in the first when Stuart Ritchie picked up Alan Ashworth from second after the second baseman delivered a one-out double to right center. Birmingham-Southern quickly erased the one-run deficit in the top of the second scoring six runs, on six hits. Barber and Pease each drove in a pair with singles as the Panthers sent 11 batters to the plate.

Radford countered with a pair in the bottom of the frame cutting the BSC lead to 6-3. Shaun House walked to lead off the RU second and came around to score after Mike Tarbox’s infield single that was thrown away by third baseman Jared Walker. A walk to Ryan Wetzel, both he and Tarbox were moved over by David Landman’s sac bunt. Dean Altivilla brought in Tarbox from third with a sac fly to right.

The rubber match of the three game series will tomorrow, Sunday, at 1 p.m.
