Eagles Complete Sweep Radford

ROCK HILL, SC - The Winthrop baseball team swept a double-header with Radford 4-0, 7-3 to capture sixth place in the Big South Conference standings, Saturday afternoon at the Winthrop Ballpark.

The Eagles (27-28, 8-13) received a solid pitching performance from Jeff Reeves, who allowed only three hits in eight innings with two walks and five strikeouts, in game one. He improved to 3-4 on the year.

Bennett Stapf, Todd Leathers and Mark Schmidt all hit solo homeruns in the first game to pace the Eagles offense. Stapf finished 3-for-3 on the day and Schmidt finished 2-for-5.

For the Highlanders, Matt Matione finished with two hits. Justin Tubb took the loss on the mound as he allowed four runs on eight hits with two walks and one strikeout.

In game two, Radford (18-31, 7-14) scored three runs in the sixth inning to make it a 4-3 Winthrop lead, but the Eagles responded with three runs in the bottom of the sixth to clinch the win.

Leathers had two RBIs and Josiah Glafenhein had two RBIs to lead the Eagles. Brian Haney finished 2-for-3 with two runs. Jeremy Plexico captured his ninth win of the season as he allowed three runs on six hits with two walks and nine strikeouts.

Radford's Shawn Abell delivered the big hit in game two as he had a bases-clearing triple. Shaun House was the only Highlander with two hits.

The Highlanders will next play in the Big South Conference Tournament this week.
