Virginia Handles Radford 5-1 in Baseball CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- Virginia scored single runs in five innings while Cav starter Jason Koshansky scattered seven hits over eight strong innings as the University of Virginia (10-3) handed Radford a 5-1 defeat in baseball action Wednesday afternoon at UVA Baseball Stadium. (Box Score) Nat Hodges went three-for-three with a run scored to pace the Highlanders. Jerry Fulton added two hits including a double as the Highlanders (4-5) and Cavs each collected seven hits a piece on the night. Cory Kolisak (0-2) would get the loss for RU, allowing five hits and four runs (three earned) in 5.2 innings while striking out three. Dave Eddinger came in to work the final 2.1 innings allowing one run on two hits. Virginia would get on the board first scoring an unearned run in the second. Dan Street would lead off the inning reaching on an error by RU shortstop Shawn Abell. Street would steal second putting himself in scoring position with no outs. Highlanders starter Cory Kolisak would get the next two UVA batters before Matt Street, would drive home is older brother with a single to left. Virginia would added another run in the third when Shawn McCleary would walk to lead off the inning. He would steal second and be moved to third by a sacrifice bunt. And score on a wild pitch. However the Cavs would not be done, they would add single runs in the fifth and sixth innings. In the fifth a one-out single by David Stone would start the rally as Kolisak would get the next UVA batter to lineout. Stone would then steal second and steal third and score as part of a double steal making it 3-0 Virginia. Virginia would make it a four run cushion after Robert Word drove a Kolisack offering over the leftfielders head. He would then move to second when Chris Sweet’s attempted sacrifice bunt turned into a bunt single putting runners at the corners with no outs. An error by RU third basenam Matt Mantione would score Word from third. RU would push across their lone run in the eighth. Nat Hodges led off the inning with his third single of the game down the right field line. Shaun Abell would collect a one out single up the middle putting runners at first and second. A pop up to third by Alan Ashworth would send Fulton to the plate with two outs. Fulton would deliver with a double to right-center scoring Hodges from third, but RU’s rally ended when Abell was thrown out at the plate by Virginia second baseman Kyle Werman. UVA would get the run back in the bottom of the eighth for the final score of 5-1. |
