Radford Rallies in Game Two to Complete Sweep of Mount St. Mary's

RADFORD, Va. - The Radford University baseball came back from a 5-1 deficit in game two between Mount St. Mary's to win both games of a doubleheader, 4-0 and 7-6. (Game 1 Box Score) (Game 2 Box Score)

The two wins improve the Highlanders to 4-4 on the season, while the Mountaineers drop to 2-3.

Radford opened up the first game by scoring three runs in the opening frame. Kellan Wolford and Keith Brunst recorded back-to-back singles with one out and a fielder's choice from Mike Tarbox allowed Wolford to score. Tarbox scored on an RBI triple from Jerry Fulton and an RBI single from Daryl Douglass scored Fulton to make the score 3-0.

The Highlanders would tack on one more run in the fourth on a solo homerun from leftfielder Scott Gvozdas to make the score 4-0.

Radford starter David Light (1-0) pitched a complete game shutout to record his first victory of the season. Light allowed only five hits, while striking out three.

Mountaineers starter Brian Santo picked up the loss, tossing six innings allowing four runs and striking out three. Gvozdas paced Radford offensively in game one going 2-for-2 with a homerun.

Radford opened up game two the same as game one, as Keith Brunst had an RBI single to give Radford an early 1-0 lead. The Mountaineers took the lead in the third, scoring four runs courtesy of a Jeff Koenig three-run blast and an RBI single from Burt Stormes to make the score 4-1.

Radford began to cut into the Mountaineers lead in the fourth, as Matt Mantione had an RBI single to make it 4-2. The Highlanders scored two runs in the fifth on a pair of RBI singles from Brunst and Wolford. Mount St. Mary's countered scoring single runs in the fourth and fifth innings. The Highlanders scored two more runs in the sixth, as pinch hitter Mike Tarbox delivered a two-run double down the left field line to tie the game 6-6.

Gvozdas drove in the winning run as he hit a sharp grounder to short and the shortstop was unable to make the play and Wolford scored the game-winning run.

Brian Williamson (2-1) pitched 1.2 innings in relief to pick up his second victory of the season.

Radford was led offensively in game two by Brunst who went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and Wolford's 3-for-4 performance.

Radford next travels to Virginia to take on the Cavaliers Wednesday afternoon.
