FLAMES BASEBALL DEFEATS RADFORD, 9-7

LYNCHBURG, Va. - The Liberty baseball team defeated the Radford Highlanders, 9-7, in game one of the teams' key Big South series at Worthington Stadium on Friday. (Box Score)

Liberty (27-19-1, 10-6 BSC) jumped on top early with a run in the bottom of the first inning when Matt Hagen (Jr., 3B, Eaton, Colo.) doubled to left center to bring in Joey Monahan (Jr., SS, Marietta, Ga.).

The Flames increased their lead to 3-0 with two runs in the third inning. The two runs were scored when Marcus Maringola (Sr., LF, Southington, Conn.) singled to left field to score Hagen and Monahan.

Radford (15-28, 5-11 BSC) put its first run on the board in the top of the fourth inning. Center fielder Jerry Fulton led the inning off with a home run to cut the Flames' lead to 3-1.

Liberty pushed its lead out to 6-1 with three runs in the sixth. John Bona (Sr., DH, Golden Beach, Fla.) drove in a run and Erich Cloninger (So., C, Denver, N.C.) drove in two runs to give Liberty a five-run lead.

Radford came back with two runs in the seventh inning to cut the LU lead to 6-3. Catcher Shaun House drove in the first run and the second run was scored by shortstop Daryl Douglass when first baseman Keith Brunst grounded into a double play.

Liberty added a run in the seventh and two more in the eighth to increase its lead to 9-3, but Radford came back in the top of the ninth to plate four runs to make the final score 9-7.

For Liberty at the plate, Hagen was 2-for-3 with two RBI and Maringola was 2-for-4 with two RBI. Shane Miller (Sr., C, Wheat Ridge Colo.) hit his third home run of the season, going 1-for-1 with two RBI. Alex Dooley (Sr., LHP, Rustburg, Va.) pitched six innings, giving up three runs on six hits to pick up the win and improve his record to 6-4 on the season. Jonathan Schneider (Jr., RHP, Springfield, Va.) earned his seventh save of the season, pitching the final third of an inning.

Fulton went 3-for-5 with two home runs and three RBI to lead the Highlanders at the plate. Kellen Wohlford was 2-for-5 with a home run and two RBI. David Light pitched six innings, giving up six runs on 10 hits to take the loss and drop his record to 2-3 on the season.

The two teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday, beginning at 1:00 p.m. at Worthington Stadium. at Worthington Stadium.
