High Point, Radford Split Doubleheader HIGH POINT, N.C. High Point and Radford each took one game of a doubleheader Saturday in Big South Conference baseball action at Erath Field. The Panthers took Game 1, 8-5, but the Highlanders rallied to take the nightcap, 12-9. (Box Score Game 1) (Box Score Game 2) Matt O'Neil's bases-clearing triple off Brian Williamson in the 7th inning drove in three runs and gave the Panthers a 7-5 advantage. HPU would add another insurance run before Chris Chandler entered and recorded his fifth save of the year in relief of Rusty Bodenheimer (2-1). Starter David Light was tagged with the loss for Radford. In the second game, Radford (11-15, 2-3 Big South) built a 6-0 lead off HPU starter Kevin Burch before the Panthers mounted a furious comeback. High Point scored five runs in the fourth inning (all with two out), capped by a three-run homer to left by Andy Harney, who also homered in the first game. The Panthers (16-14, 3-2) added two runs in the fifth to grab a 7-6 advantage, but the Highlanders plated three runs in the 5th and two more in the 7th to take a 12-7 advantage. HPU added two runs in the bottom of the 7th on Kemp Smith's homer to left-center, but it wasn't enough. Cory Koliscak (2-3) got the win in Game 2, while Chandler (3-2) was saddled with the loss for High Point. Williamson recorded his first save of the year. The teams will play at 1:00 pm Sunday at Erath Field. Riley Gostisha (5-2, 4.23) will start for High Point, while Radford will go with Dave Eddinger (2-0, 2.53). |
