RU Athletic Director Greig Denny
Greig Denny is the guiding force behind unprecedented growth in the RU athletic program. Denny, has accumulated a long list of accomplishments since being promoted to the athletics director's post in July, 1996.
During his tenure, Denny has added programs in men's and women's indoor and outdoor track and field and women's swimming and diving, bringing the number of RU varsity programs to 19. He has emphasized the need for enhancing RU's athletic facilities, both indoor and outdoor. A new track and soccer stadium project is scheduled for completion in the fall of 2002. This facility will be the home venue for men's and women's soccer and track and field and includes locker room facilities, stadium seating for 5,000, a press box, training room, weight room, and offices for the track and soccer coaching staff.
During this period a number of indoor enhancements have also taken place. These include a new SPORTCOURT volleyball playing surface, new basketball scoreboards, refurbishing the basketball floor, and upgrading accommodations for press row and the scorer's table.
RU athletes have enjoyed tremendous success on the field and in the classroom during Denny's tenure. Highlander teams have advanced to NCAA national championships in men's basketball, men's soccer, women's soccer, and volleyball over the past five years.
During this time RU also had it's first track and field All American in 400 meter runner Khadijah Conda. This success on the field and court has been mirrored in the classroon where RU teams continue to excell. This is no where more evident than the national recognition for the RU women's basketball team for achieving a GPA of 3.--- that placed them second nationally in 2001-02. During this same period nine Highlander teams were recognized for attaining a team GPA of above 3.0.
>Denny also has served on several NCAA committees, and is currently a member of the NCAA Division I Championships/Competition Cabinet. The cabinet is responsible for the basic oversight of all Division I championships in addition to reviewing recommendations from sports committees regarding the administration of those championships. He has also served as the chair of the Big South Council of Directors of Athletics and an Ex-officio member of the Big South Executive Committee.
Denny previously worked as an assistant and associate athletic director for thirteen years under former athletic director Dr. Chuck Taylor before earning his promotion to the top spot. Denny also served as Radford's baseball coach, taking over the fledgling program in 1985 and guiding the squad to a then school record 14 wins. His efforts with the university's second and third varsity teams helped lay the foundation for the success that the baseball program enjoys today.
A native of Adams, N.Y., Denny received a degree in health education in 1979 from the State University of New York at Cortland. After graduating, he worked for three years at Newark High School in Newark, N.Y., where he taught health and coached baseball and football. He left Newark to attend Virginia Tech, where he received a master's degree in sports administration in 1983.
Denny and his wife Ellen, live in Radford. They have two daughters, Madalyn and Alexis, and a son, William.
