Now that students are back from tanning themselves on the beach, it is time to
buckle down
and get back to work. For some of those students, there is more to worry about
than just a
test or some homework. Now marks the time for pure chaos among graduating seniors.
Between buying your cap and gown, ordering announcements, and making sure that all
necessary forms have been filled out; some seniors are reaching their breaking
points.
RU is trying to help those who have no idea what is going on, and trying to
coach them
before the big day arrives. All graduating seniors should have received a
complete schedule
of the graduation day, down to the hour. It also was sent to remind Graduate
students as
well as Undergrads of upcoming deadlines before the big day.
You may think, "So what? It's just a few forms." Well graduating seniors are
also in the
process of lining up what they will be doing after May.
While some may be stressing, RU is also trying to help out in this search as
well. RU has
been holding forums on how to get through an interview, etiquette during a
dinner meeting,
as well as bringing in local businesses who are searching for recent graduates
to join their
team.
One of RU's well known events include the bi-annual Protocol Dinner. At the
dinner, RU
students are informed on the proper way to present yourself in that situation.
One is held
in October for December grads, and one in February for Spring grads.
Not only is RU helping those aiming to get out into the career world, but also those
planning on attending Grad. school. Trained professionals have been made
available to those
that needs help with applications or just general advice on how to succeed in
Grad. School.
One name that every graduating senior should know by know is Eric Melniczek,
RU's Assistant
Director of Internships. He is all over your portal, letting you know of
upcoming internship
and job opportunities all over the country.
"Some things that students can do to get ahead would be to participate in
programs or seminars that
we have," said Melniczek. Some of the workshops that the Career Center hold
focus on portfolio
development, interviewing strategies, resume writing skills, a mock interview
program and career
fairs.
"Follow up is key. Most college students will not send a thank you note even
though we strongly
encourage them to do so. They think the process ends when the interview ends,"
said Melniczek of
how to make yourself a stand-out candidate after the interview ends.
Some final advice, "Get some career experiences whether it be through a student
club or
organization internship, volunteer within the community something to enhance
your protfolio or
credentials," said Melniczek.
