QUICK-RESPONSE GRANTS FOR PROPOSAL DEVELOPMENT
These funds are available for projects needing proposal development funds quickly to be able to respond to a specific Request for Proposals (printable version)
Purpose: The purpose of the Quick Response Grants of Proposal Development program is to assist members of the faculty and staff to be able to secure externally funded grants and contracts when there is not enough time to go through the normal Proposal Development Award process. These short-term awards are primarily to purchase time for a principal author and/or assistant to write a competitive award for a specific Request for Proposal (RFP) without much lead time.
Eligibility of Project: The work must lead to a proposal for a significantly larger project of potential interest to an identified, external funding source. The external project must be allowed to recover facilities and administration (indirect) costs or have other significant benefits for RU.
If you wish to respond to a Request for Proposals with a deadline that does not permit you to submit to the next Proposal Development Award deadline (October 1, February 1, or April 1), a Quick-Response Grant for Proposal Development application is appropriate.
Eligibility of Applicant: Members of Radford University faculty and staff are eligible. Individuals or teams may apply, but at least one applicant must be either full-time or, at a minimum, on a continuing appointment by the university. Those new to grants and contracts are especially encouraged to submit. Proposals fitting within the Research and Development Institute are encouraged.
Allowable Costs Funds may be used for such items as faculty/staff, student assistance, clerical support, materials, and/or travel.
If the proposal-writing requires a large amount of time, faculty members may request summer or overload funds of no more than $2,000 or reassigned time from teaching one course or funds to hire an assistant. The usual cost of replacing a faculty member is $2,600 (+$199 for FICA) for a 3-credit hour course, with exceptions listed in the November 30, 1999 letter from Dr. Ferren.
Final reports will consist of a brief summary of the status of the project and the proposal(s) submitted. Final reports will be due one year from the start date of the award.
Submission: An e-mail attachment and one signed paper copy of each proposal must be sent to the Office of Sponsored Programs & Grants Management. The Office is located at 201 Walker Hall. The P.O. Box is 6926. If you have questions, call Ami Meador, 540-831-5035.
Format and Review: Proposals will be reviewed by members of the faculty and staff.
You should not need to submit a proposal longer than 1 or 2 pages, written for a general audience. Basically, the proposal should answer the following questions:
