The Clothesline Project The Clothesline Project is an effort to raise awareness of violence against women. It is a visual testimony to the shattering effect of violence against women and the impact it has on society. Survivors of violence, friends, and families have created shirts emblazoned with strong, direct messages. The shirts are hung side-by-side, as though the survivors were standing there themselves, shoulder to shoulder, bearing witness to the violence committed against women on a daily basis. Shirts are color-coded representing the multiple types of sexual violence based on the following color-code: White: "In memory" of a loved one who was murdered as a result of sexual/gender violence Yellow/beige: Survivors of dating/domestic violence Red/pink/orange: Survivors of date rape and/or sexual assault Purple/lavender: For those attacked based on sexual orientation Gray: Survivors of gang rape Black: Survivors of sexual harassment Blue/green: Survivors of incest/child sexual abuse Brown: Survivors of ritual abuse; survivors of sexual hazing crimes Multi-colored: Survivors of multi-types of violence Clothesline Project: Fall 2008
