The "^" symbol stands for "hold the 'Control' key while you press this letter."

Write Out (ctrl O) means "save," and will give you a chance to enter or correct the spelling of the file name. Press Return to finish saving the document.

"Exit" (ctrl X) means "Quit the editing program," and will ask you whether you want to save the document if you haven't saved it since your last editing change.

After you exit Pico, the Unix command line will reappear at the bottom of the screen, but you may still see a ghost of the editing window above the line.

Type "ls -l" to see the file list with dates, to assure yourself that you have exited the editor and saved your last changes.

Finally, type "exit" and press Return to close your PuTTY/Terminal connection.
