Room Assignment Process

 1.  How are room assignments made?

Room assignments for new students entering in the fall are made according to the date your deposit to the University is received (As well as your Themed Housing Interest Card, if you applied for themed housing).  Please see number 2 for more information about themed housing.  Therefore, the earlier in the calendar year you commit to attending Radford University, the more likely you are to receive one of the preferences you stated on the Housing Preference Cards.  Some students make their deposit to the University as early as January.  When possible, we try to match your stated quad preferences.  However, due to space limitations we are not always able to match everyone’s preferences.  Please know that most students enjoy and thrive in their residence halls no matter where they live on campus.

 2.  How do I apply for Priority Placement into one of the Themed Living Communities?

Themed Living Communities offer you the opportunity to live with other students with similar interests.  Click here to learn more about specific themes that are offered.  You can apply to live in one of the Themed Learning Communities by completing the Themed Housing Interest Form under New Students on the Residential Life webpage.   Due to the number of applications received, very few spaces in each of the themed halls remain. If you are interested in these halls, please apply soon for maximum consideration.

 3.  How can I indicate my preference for a specific building?

As a new student to RU, you are able to select up to two quads in which you would prefer to live. A quad is a grouping of 4-5 buildings in a similar location on campus.  New students are not able to preference specific buildings.  However, your quad preference will give us an idea of the general area on campus you prefer to live.

 4.  Where are the residence hall quads located?

Muse Quad contains four residence hall communities within the same building, making it the most popular location for new students.  Main Quad includes Jefferson, Madison, Tyler, and Washington Halls.  Moffett Quad includes Bolling (upperclass students only), Draper, Moffett, and Pocahontas Halls.  Governor’s Quad includes Floyd, Peery, Stuart, and Trinkle Halls.  Click here to see a map of campus.

 5.  I would like to request a roommate.  How do I do this?

To request a specific person as a roommate, you will both need to send us a letter stating that you want to live with the other person.  Please be certain to include your name and student ID or Social Security number, and your roommate’s full name and student ID number or other identifying information.  All requests must be mutual, in writing, and received in the Office of Residential Life by June 30, 2009 for consideration.  Requests can be e-mailed from your Radford e-mail account (to verify your identity) to res-life@radford.edu or a written letter can be mailed to Office of Residential Life, Radford University, Radford, VA, 24142.  When requests are mutual and submitted by June 30, 2009, you will be placed with your requested roommate.

 6.  My prospective roommate and I selected different quads in which we prefer to live.  How will our assignment be determined?

If possible, we will select one of the quads that you or your roommate preferenced.  Therefore, we will try to meet one of your requests.  We will honor your mutual roommate request above all other requests unless you notify us otherwise.

 7.  If my roommate and I have different dates for our deposits to the University, how does the room assignment process occur?

All housing assignments are done with regard to dates of deposit to the University.  For roommates, the person with the later date of deposit will be used to determine your order in the housing assignments process.  We believe that students consider who their roommates are as being more important than the locations of their rooms.  In some cases, this means that the later date of deposit will result in a person not getting a first choice, such as a Themed Living Environment.  Therefore, if your building placement is more important than your indicated roommate, you will need to send this information to the Office of Residential Life by June 30, 2009.  Requests can be e-mailed from your Radford e-mail account (to verify your identity) to res-life@radford.edu or a written letter can be mailed to Office of Residential Life, Radford University, Radford, VA, 24142.  Unless you indicate otherwise, we will operate on the understanding that your roommate preference takes priority over your indicated housing preferences.

 8.  When is the last day to change my building preferences?

All changes to your housing preferences must be received in the Office of Residential Life by June 30, 2009.

 9.  If all the halls are smoke-free, why do you ask my smoking preferences?

All residence halls are smoke-free living environments, and smoking must be done at least 20 feet from the residence halls.  We ask students to confidentially tell us their smoking habits due to the high number of people who dislike or are allergic to the smoke which clings to clothing after smoking.  Your honesty will help us make better placements.

10. When will I know my hall and room placement for the fall?

You will be notified by postal mail the first week of August of your room assignment, phone number, post office box number.  At that time, you will also receive the name and contact information of your future roommate.
