Position Responsibilities

The responsibilities of the Resident Director are numerous and varied. The following is a representative, but   not all-inclusive, list of RD responsibilities.

  1. Maintains a professional attitude and manner while serving as a Radford University employee and representative.  Serves as a role model for students.
  2. Supports the academic mission of the University through the presentation of academic support programs and active intervention with residents experiencing academic difficulties.
  3.  Knows and understands the operation of the University and its services.
  4.  Supervises and evaluates the Resident Assistants (RAs) and Staff Assistants (work-study students).
  5.  Becomes acquainted with each student living in the residence hall as quickly as possible.
  6.  Assists students with their personal and group concerns, especially in terms of interpersonal concerns, within the limits of his/her training and capability.  Refers students as needed.
  7.  Facilitates student engagement in learning and community development through a programming model that offers a variety of activities and opportunities to residents.
  8. Serves as advisor to Residence Hall Council (RHC). 
  9.  Serves duty nights on weekdays and weekends as scheduled by the Assistant Director/Area Coordinator (AD/AC).
  10. Participates in all pre‑service training sessions throughout the year. The month of August is a required training period.
  11. Attends weekly meetings including, but are not limited to: one-on-ones with supervisor and supervisees, two committee meetings, quad meeting, building meeting and an all staff meeting as scheduled by Residential Life. 
  12. Assists in maintaining order in emergency situations.
  13. Completes administrative and clerical tasks such as roster verification assigned by the Assistant Director/Area Coordinator and/or the Office of Residential Life.
  14. Informs the Assistant Director/Area Coordinator of all situations through informal visits, conferences, and meetings.
  15. Helps educate staff and students on how to submit maintenance/housekeeping requests. Monitors the timeliness of work requests and the general condition of public residence hall areas.
  16. Knows, understands, and supports the rationale for University and residence hall policies and procedures and is able to explain, interpret, and enforce them effectively.  Abides by all policies.
  17. Serves as the initial administrator, investigator, and conduct case officer for the University conduct system for violations of University policy occurring within the residence hall.
