Academic & Grades Policies FAQ

What is the policy on suspension?
  • First Semester Freshman & Transfer Students
    • All new students (freshman or transfer) who earn less than a 2.00 GPA but at least a 1.25 GPA at the conclusion of their first semester at RU will be placed on academic probation until such a time that they either raise their GPA to 2.00+ or have attempt 30 semester credits at RU.  Once a student attempts 30 or more semester credits at RU they fall under the academic requirements for continuing students (see below).  Students on probation may not carry more than 16 semester hours of registration in any one semester.
    • New students (freshman or transfer) who fall below 1.25 during their first semester will be suspended and will not be allowed to continue in the next full semester.  No exceptions are made to the continuing student suspension policy; however, first-semester students can make application for permission to continue through a contract-based program called SORTS.  Not all applications to the SORTS program are accepted.
  • Continuing Undergraduate Students
    • Students who have attempted 30 or more hours at RU are expected to earn at least a 2.00 cumulative GPA in order to avoid suspension.  Suspensions for continuing students don’t go into effect until the conclusion of the academic year in which the student attempted their 30th semester hour – meaning the end of the last summer session in any given year.
    • Consequently, students who will have attempted 30 or more hours by the end of the fall semester will have both the spring and summer semesters to bring their cumulative GPA up to a 2.00 in order to avoid suspension.  However, students who have earned less than a 2.00 cumulative GPA by the end of the spring semester must enroll at Radford University during the summer semester and earn grades sufficient enough to increase their GPAs to at least 2.000 by the end of the summer, or they will be suspended for the fall semester.  Transfer credits have no bearing on GPA.
  • Basically, students who have attempted 30 or more hours at RU and who’s cumulative GPAs is under 2.00 at the end of the last summer session of that same year WILL BE SUSPENDED.
  • No exceptions are made to this policy, no matter how close the student's GPA is to 2.000.  Suspended students who wish to return to RU following their semester(s) of suspension must apply for readmission.  Readmission is never automatic.

What qualifies me for the dean's list?
  • Appearing on the Dean's List is the most prestigious academic recognition RU students can receive for their performance during a semester.  Students will be placed on the Dean's List if they meet three specific criteria: they must have 12 semester hours of coursework graded A-F, earn GPAs of at least 3.4 for all courses not graded on a pass-fail basis, and obtain no grade lower than "C."  In addition, students must have no incompletes.
