During the 2004-2005 academic year, partially
in response to Program Review during the previous year, the Radford
University Department of Mathematics and Statistics developed
four new introductory level courses. These new courses more effectively
link their subject matter to students’ majors. It is hoped
that the new courses will better facilitate student learning
and student success in mathematics. These courses were approved
last spring as meeting general education requirements for students
who would matriculate during fall 2005 and later.
However, hundreds of continuing students
have enrolled and will continue to enroll in these courses so
that they, too, might be successful in mathematics. Moreover,
two of the math courses commonly used to meet general education
requirements, MATH 103 and MATH 109, while still “on the books,” are
not currently being offered, severely limiting the options for
students who have not yet met their math requirements.
While I recognize that pre-fall 2005 matriculants
could request through the Academic Petition process that these
courses meet their general education requirement, given the sheer
number of students in this situation, to require them to submit
positions would create an onerous burden upon them, their advisors
and advising centers, and your staff in the Registrar’s
Office.
Therefore, it is my strong recommendation that all Radford University
students, regardless of their semester of matriculation, be permitted
to use any of the following courses to partially fulfill their
general education requirement in Area 6:
- MATH 111: Math and Human Development I
- MATH 112: Math and Human Development II
- MATH 114: Math and Human Society
- MATH 116: Math and Humanity
