RCPT 319. Inclusive Services
Three hours lecture (3).

Prerequisites: RCPT 112 and 210.

Broadens the understanding of recreation delivery to individuals and groups that have been historically excluded from full participation. Provides basic understanding and application of techniques for inclusion rather than exclusion of exceptional individuals who may require some specialized setting and/or recreation programs and accommodations in order to be active participants. May not receive credit if previously taken RPCT 219.

  1. Detailed Description of Content of the Course

This course deals with aspects of disabling conditions and how individuals with these conditions may be integrated into public and private services. Topics discussed will include attitudes toward individuals with disabilities, legislation, accessibility, rights of individuals with disabilities, and understanding of specific conditions.

  1. Detailed Description of Conduct of the Course

The course will include lecture and experiential components which are intended to further student understanding of responsibilities for serving individuals with disabilities. Personalizing beliefs toward disabilities and drawing on past Experiences will be used to facilitate student learning. In addition, students will be required to participate in several activities which focus on the inclusion rather than the exclusion of these individuals.

  1. Goals and Objectives of the Course

At the conclusion of the course, the student will be able to:

1. Develop one adapted recreation activity for a specific individual with a disability.
2. Identify five pieces of legislation that impact individuals with disabilities.
3. Identify five aspects of architectural access for the individuals with disabilities.
4. Distinguish between the general characteristics which affect individuals with disabilities.
5. Identify values and attitudes which are factors of discrimination regarding individuals with disabilities.

  1. Assessment Measures

Students will be assessed by their success with six quizzes, a comprehensive final examination, a written and oral activity adaptation, attendance at a professional development experience, a day in a wheelchair, and a daily log. In addition, students will have the opportunity to volunteer at a local agency which serves persons with disabilities.
