Theatre 376. Theatre History
Three hours lecture (3).
This course is the study of theatre from the Renaissance Period to Contemporary Theatre, with specific attention to theatre architecture and literature. Elements of audience, actor, stage scenery, and their relation to each other and to the social and intellectual environment of these periods are also studied.
This course concentrates on the study of theatre from the birth of naturalism in Europe through the development of modern American realism, with specific attention to theatrical elements of audience, actor, stage scenery, theatre architecture, literature and the relation of each to social and intellectual environment of the period.
This is a survey course which covers the major genres of western theatre from the 1870s through the 1970s.
Students will recognize a broad variety of modern theatre literature. Students will recognize the social forces that create and maintain theatre within a society. At the conclusion of the course, students will be able to distinguish plays that represent the major modern theatre genres.
The final grade in this course will come from 1/4 of the grade of the critiques of two Radford theatre productions, 1/4 of the average from pop quizzes, 1/4 of the mid-term grade, and 1/4 of the final exam grade.
