MUSC 420. Methods and Materials in Music Therapy
Three Hours Lecture (3).

Prerequisites MUSC112 and Upper level standing as a Music Therapy major.

Pre. or co-requisites MUSC205 and 336.

Investigates existing methods and resource materials in music therapy. Development of new method and resource materials. Covers practices and techniques of recreational music and their application to all disability areas.

2. Detailed Description of Course Content

Content is as follows:

• Music education
  • Dalcroze
  • Orff
  • Kodaly
• Survey of published printed materials and methods in music therapy
• Survey of published recorded materials and methods in music therapy
• Composition and application of original activities and techniques in music therapy
• Composition of appropriate music and lyrics
• Performance of activities and techniques in class for all disabilities
• Evaluation of original and published methods and materials

3. Detailed Description of Conduct of the Course

An informal approach to lecture and experiential will be emphasized.

4. Goals and Objectives of the Course

At the conclusion of the course, the student will:

• Demonstrate knowledge and clinical musical therapy information, methods and materials.
• Prepare music therapy sessions in a creative manner.
• Identify areas overlapping in music education and music therapy.

5. Assessment Measures

Students will prepare a resource file, present planned activities in music therapy, present in class music therapy groups, develop an annotated bibliography and demonstrate functional musicianship.
