MUSC 364. Jazz Ensemble Methods
Two hours lecture, laboratory (1).

Co-requisite: MUSC 133 Jazz Ensemble.

Provides an overview of the methods and materials necessary for the development of high school/middle school jazz ensemble programs.

This course focuses on the following:

1. Overview of the history and development of jazz music.
2. Development of a philosophy of jazz education.
3. Development of an understanding of jazz styles.
4. Survey of appropriate literature and materials for middle school and high school jazz ensembles.
5. The development of a planned course of study for a middle school and/or high school jazz ensemble program.
6. Rehearsal techniques for the jazz ensemble.
7. The teaching of improvisation to students in school jazz ensembles.
8. Use of technology for playing, recording, arranging and teaching within the jazz medium.
9. Legal and Ethical Issues in Education

  1. Detailed Description of Conduct of Course

The course includes reading and listening assignments, discussion, lecture, papers, class presentations, micro-teaching, and exams.

  1. Goals and Objectives of the Course

At the conclusion of the course, the student will:

1. Discuss the historical development of jazz.
2. Articulate a philosophy of jazz education.
3. Analyze the characteristics of different jazz styles.
4. Describe procedures for selecting appropriate literature for the school jazz ensemble.
5. Develop a planned course of study for a middle school and/or high school jazz ensemble program.
6. Demonstrate effective rehearsal techniques and procedures for instructing school jazz ensembles.
7. Model methods for teaching improvisation to students.
8. Understand the technology available in the playing, recording, arranging and teaching within the jazz medium
9. Be able to articulate and understanding of the Legal and Ethical Issues in Education
10. Be able to apply learned information and techniques to the National Standards for Arts Education (Music).
11. Be able to apply learned information and techniques to the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOLs).

Assessment will include written tests, projects, micro-teaching evaluations, homework and a written final examination.
