INSTRUMENTAL CONDUCTING
MUSC356. Instrumental Conducting
Three hours (2).
Prerequisites: MUSC354 and one semester each of Woodwind Class, Brass Class, Percussion Class and String Class.
Continuation of MUSC354 with emphasis on band and orchestral conducting. Score reading, instrumental score interpretation, instrumental rehearsal techniques, instrumentation and transposition stressed. Each student prepares score for rehearsal by large instrumental ensemble.
Emphasis (continues) on score reading skills, score marking procedures, and repertory and programming concepts for the school instrumental music educator.
Students conduct selected works for wind band and symphony orchestra with the instructor at the piano. Students also conduct portions of rehearsals with the University Concert Band and/or Wind Ensemble on several occasions during the semester. Some observation of rehearsals and performances by elementary and high school instrumental conductors.
At the conclusion of the course students will have acquired considerable skill in selcting quality wind band literature, developing score reading skills, error detection techniques and leadership qualities necessry for preparing an entire program of contrasting literature for wind band.
Three grades: conducting evaluations, class discussions and one paper.
