CHOREOGRAPHIC STUDIES I
DNCE 320: Choreographic Studies I
Two credit hours(2).
Four hours technique.
Prerequisite: One semester hour of DNCE 220.
Choreographic studies in dance. Development of solo, duo, or group composition in dance for analysis and critical appraisal, formal production of student works may be included. Those repeating the class for credit will select a problem with emphasis upon form, style, accompaniment, and communication of dance as an art form. May be repeated for a total of 6 semester hours of credit.
1. Choreographic problems varying in regard to rhythm, motivation, accompaniment
2. Choreography of the problem with regard to
a. Design
b. Dynamics
c. Rhythm
d. Motivation and gesture
e. Form
3. Sensory and ideational stimuli
a. Auditory
b. Visual
c. Tactile
d. Props
4. Creative problems
a. Abstraction of gesture
b. Sound vs. silence
c. Word studies
d. Contrasting styles of movement
e. Chance operations
5. Presentation of movement studies for analysis and critical appraisal by the instructor and class participants.
6. Site-specific dance and final project.
a. Selection of a theme
b. Development of accompaniment
c. Choreography of the theme
d. Application of costumes, set decor and/or lighting
e. Presentation of composition for analysis and critical evaluation at public performance
A professional approach in which the student of dance explores the elements of dance composition, experiences the choreographic process and develops a critical perspective.
At the conclusion of the course, the student will:
1. Develop choreographic skills by creating solo, duo and group compositions.
2. Demonstrate an ability to analyze and critically appraise the form and content of a dance composition.
Assessment measures include presentation of movement studies, and final projects, review of videotapes of student works, class discussion, written critiques, and class attendance.
