Art 480. Publication Design
Two hours lecture, demonstration or critique; three hours studio (3).

Prerequisite: Art 280,281 and 380.

Graphic design of large and/or complex publications such as annual reports and coordinated print pieces, books, and technical manuals for professional offset print reproduction. Extensive practice in electronic file preparation with management of large and complex layouts and high resolution images (2-D) .

  1. Detailed Description of the Content of the Course

This course allows student graphic designers to practice their craft in the visual translation of ideas into two dimensions through the use of various materials, media, and technology. Studio assignments require research, setting of design priorities and alternatives, development and refinement of concepts, crafting of design comprehensive and oral presentation of comprehensives. Time management in the execution of complex studio assignments entails development of communication skills in working with other design professionals.

  1. Detailed Description of the Conduct of the Course

Assignments allow students to practice problem solving through research and design and become familiar with the approval process from thumbnails through finished presentation comprehensives. Skillful craft in the execution of comprehensive designs and electronic prepress files is perfected in studio and homework assignments. Emphasis is on developing independent and original solutions to problems within realistic budget and time restraints. Discussion in class gives students an awareness of professional design practice in advertising, design studios, in-house corporate, and free-lance businesses. The oral presentation of an instructional topic with visual aids of charts, graphs and illustrations is a component of the course.

  1. Goals and Objectives of the Course

Students will demonstrate professional skills in the research, concept development, design comprehensives and presentations of complex publication designs. Students will develop an understanding of the professional practices of the graphic designer through hands-on experience or reports on readings. Students will polish their craft in the use of a variety of media for comprehensive designs. Students will perfect design problem solving through critical analysis and applied semiotics.

  1. Assessment Measures

Letter grades will be given for assignments, participation in class and critiques, and written tests. Grades for assignments will be based on a combination of degree of skill in craft, and evidence of understanding of design problem solving.
