LEADERSHIP AND MOTIVATION

MGNT 421. Leadership and Motivation.
Three hours lecture(3).

Prerequisites: MGNT 322 or permission of instructor.

Leadership situations, styles, skills; motivation of self and co-workers. Emphasis on in-depth application of concepts to managerial practice.

1. Motivational basics (theories, concepts, applications)

a. Motivational factors, including the following: individual differences, job characteristics, and organizational practices.
b. Critical psychological states, including the following: experienced meaningfulness, experienced responsibility, and knowledge of results.
c. Selected theories and cases, including the following: achievement motivation, existence/relatedness/growth, and company descriptions.

2. Motivational situations--individual variables

a. Motivation and personality
b. Motivation and occupation/career
c. Motivation to manage

3. Motivational situations--group and environmental variables

a. Motivation and work groups
b. Motivation and "corporate culture"
c. Motivation and organizational rewards, including the following: money, status and promotion, and perquisites ("Perks")

4. Leadership basics (theories, concepts, applications)

a. Core leadership skills, including the following: empowerment, intuition, self-understanding, vision, and value congruence.
b. Contingency approaches
c. Leadership and followership
d. Problem seeking
e. Credibility of leaders, including the following: expertise, trustworthiness, and rapport.
f. Power types, including the following: position, legitimate, expert, coercive, coalition, referent, and real-personal.
g. Leadership style, including the following: directing, coaching, supporting, and delegating.

  1. Detailed Description of Conduct of Course

The course consists of lecture/discussion, research projects, examinations. Theories will be discussed, with cases and experiential exercises as appropriate. Student presentations may be required, and students may be assigned to groups.

  1. Goals and Objectives of the Course

At the conclusion of the course, the student will be able to:

1. Develop self-awareness of motivation and leadership skills.
2. Understand motivational dimensions in real world organizations.
3. Understand leadership situations, styles, and skills.
4. Develop leadership skills.
5. Apply motivational knowledge and leadership practical situations (case analyses and/or experiential work).

  1. Assessment Measures

Assessment of the students' success will be based on the instructor's selected combination of class participation, examinations, and term papers. Special emphasis will be placed on class participation in various leadership activities.
