Administrative Communications
Three hours
lecture(3).
Instruction in all types of communication required to function effectively in an office. Communications fundamentals, business English, correspondence, written reports, oral communication, employment communications and other special communication applications emphasized.
This course involves instructions in all types of communications so that the student will be able to function effectively in an office. Students cover such topics as: grammar, punctuation and style, basic writing skills, and writing effective office correspondence. Instruction and practice in proofreading are incorporated throughout the course. This course is also designed to acquaint the student with the principles of administrative/business communication and give the student practice in solving business problems through the use of written communications, research and report writing, and oral communications.
This course involves lecture by the instructor and written assignments by the student. Written assignments may includepersuasive messages, resume/application letter, bad news messages, written proposal, and written reports. In addition, students are to give in-class oral reports.
The student is expected to:
1. Explain the communication process, its importance, and its role in a business enterprise.
2. Explain human nature and the role of communication in human relations.
3. Apply the principles underlying all communication, especially how to handle business problem situations with letters, memos, and written and oral reports.
4. Describe form, style, and tone, and how to use them for more effective letters, memos, and written and oral reports.
5. Further develop the power to inform and persuade others through the use of language.
6. Gather, organize, and evaluate facts and ideas in order to reach conclusions and make recommendations.
7. Know the importance of international business communication, understand the complexity of cross-cultural communication, learn guidelines for cross-cultural communication, and become aware of key resources in international business communication.
Assessment of the student's success in the course is based on written assignments, resume/application letter, written reports, oral reports, tests, and final examination.
